Quote for the week

"Shared leadership... is less like a an orchestra, where the conductor is always in charge, and more like a jazz band, where leadership is passed around ... depending on what the music demands at the moment and who feels most moved by the spirit to express the music." Phil Schlechty 2001

Join my blog and share what this quote could mean for a classroom, club, or team. It may mean one thing for students and another for the staff. It only takes a couple of minutes to join. Give it a try.

  1. Whether in the classroom, on the playing field, or as members of a community, shared leadership maximizes the power found in the strengths and talents of the members of that team. It brings a richness and depth to performance and problem solving that is missing if the voice of only one leader is heard. Nurturing the leader in ALL and valuing the contributions of every member raises the odds for a magical performance by ALL!

  2. As educators, it's easy to put ourselves in front of a class and simply play the music we have become accustomed to playing, year after year. It's what we're comfortable with, and we know it so well. It's interesting, because we're constantly talking about how kids have their own learning style, but we also push them to learn and grow outside their comfort zone. I'd say it's no different for the teacher. I love the blues---but I'm thinking that trying a little jazz once in awhile, wouldn't be a bad idea either. :~)
